Invisalign has gained popularity as a more discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces. Instead of relying on metal brackets and wires, this treatment uses transparent plastic trays that fit snugly over your arches to shift your teeth to their ideal places.

But did you know that with the addition of attachments and bands, this service can sometimes also be used to help correct less severe overbites? Continue reading to learn about 3 of the advantages of fixing your malocclusion with Invisalign!

Benefit #1: Preserve Dental Health

Some people think of their overbite as more of an inconvenience than an oral problem, especially if the misalignment is mild. But the truth is that an overbite can erode your enamel unevenly or prematurely, increasing the risk of developing tooth decay or sustaining injuries like chips and cracks. Not only that, but the longer your treatment remains unaddressed, the more likely it is to progressively worsen.

Invisalign can help correct the position of your jaw to correct your malocclusion to prevent these problems, though it sometimes requires that small attachments, or buttons, or clear or tooth-colored composite resin be cemented to your enamel. These provide an additional anchor for the clear trays to grasp your teeth more firmly to correct your bite alignment.

Benefit #2: Enhance Enunciation

Your teeth play an essential role in your ability to communicate because you form different sounds and words by pressing your tongue against them in specific ways. But if they don’t touch together correctly the way they should, you might develop changes in your speech patterns, like a lisp or slur.

You might still have slightly altered speaking patterns while wearing the smooth plastic trays, but once your treatment is complete and your overbite has been corrected, you might find that you can speak more clearly and eloquently than ever!

Benefit #3: Alleviate Aches

Did you know that patients with malocclusions, such as an overbite, may be more likely to develop TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders? If your jaw has to overcompensate for an incorrect bite alignment, it can place added pressure on the two sliding-disc joints (TMJ) that connect your jaw to your skull just below your ears on either side of your face. This can cause aches and inflammation that might not subside until the problem is corrected.

Although transparent trays can sometimes be used to correct an overbite, patients with more severe concerns might still require more traditional orthodontics, such as standard braces, which allow for a greater manipulation of movement. Your dentist can examine your condition to let you know whether they think Invisalign is right for you!
